Discover the elegance, clarity, and ideal beauty of Neoclassicism — an artistic movement that looked to ancient Greece and Rome for inspiration and transformed European art in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
In this class, we will explore how Neoclassicism emerged as a reaction against the decorative elegance of Rococo and the growing fascination with Classical Antiquity. We will learn to recognize its defining features: balanced compositions, precise drawing, sculptural figures, restrained colours, and stories inspired by ancient history and mythology. We will also discover why artists turned to the ancient world at a time of political revolution and profound social change.
What you will gain from this class
A clear understanding of what Neoclassicism is and how it developed
The ability to recognize the key characteristics of Neoclassical art
Knowledge of the most important artists and masterpieces of the movement
An understanding of how ancient Greek and Roman art inspired Neoclassical painters
Insight into the relationship between art, politics, and the ideals of the Enlightenment
Greater confidence when recognizing and discussing Neoclassical art in museums and while traveling
